Plastic Caging
Alternative Design Manufacturing offers a broad selection of plastic rodent caging systems for the housing of mice, rats, hamsters and guinea pigs. Our selection of cage tops and bottoms are available in two quality plastic resins. One resin is polycarbonate (PC); the other is polysulfone in the Udel® brand (UD).
The resin you select should be based on the degree of autoclaving, longevity and budget. This includes,
but is not limited to, cage change frequency, autoclave settings, cage washing, cost factors, and general
handling/storage.
Polycarbonate (PC) is the least expensive. It is not recommended for autoclaving and is very durable. PC is clear and offers excellent visibility.
Udel® (UD) is moderately priced and is suitable for most applications. It will not break down from exposure to very hot water and is autoclavable. The natural resin is light amber colored with excellent visibility that does not deteriorate. Alternative Design also offers Udel in low color(clear). Udel is our most demanded product and provides excellent value and dependable use for years. Udel is offered with a 2-year, pro-rated guarantee.
All of Alternative Design’s cages are manufactured with a unique X pattern on the bottom. This
distinctive X design creates a more efficient flow of the resin through the mould. This assures material
evenness to the extremities and results in a more consistent and durable product.
